Over Vladimir Poetin denken we alles te weten. Maar wie is zijn tegenstander Volodymyr Zelensky eigenlijk? Een jaar geleden had nog nooit iemand van hem gehoord, maar nu siert de Oekraïense president de voorpagina’s van kranten wereldwijd. Hij was een komiek en is nu een oorlogsleider, maar is Zelensky wel een democraat in hart en nieren? 

In deze speciale Perestrojkast-opname op 17 december, live en met publiek vanuit de Balie, nemen de makers Geert Jan Hahn en Floris Akkerman Zelensky onder de loep. Dit doen ze met NRC-journalist Steven Derix, die samen met Marina Shelkunova de biografie Zelensky, de oorlogspresident schreef. Het boek is onder meer vertaald in het Engels, Duits en Noors. Ook Iryna Moreno schuift aan tafel. Moreno komt uit Kyiv en woont inmiddels ruim 13 jaar in Nederland. Ze is een van de bestuurders van Hart voor Oost-Europa. Zij zal de mening van ‘de Oekraïner’ over Zelensky vertolken.

 We zullen tijdens het gesprek terug- en vooruitblikken op negen maanden oorlog, en Zelensky ophemelen en bekritiseren.

Born and raised in Moscow, Galina Timchenko has experienced up close the importance of reporting on Russia and the difficulties faced by critical Russian journalists. Timchenko is co-founder, CEO and publisher of Meduza – the largest independent Russian media outlet still reporting on the war in Ukraine. Meduza was labeled a “foreign agent” by the state, but that did not stop her work. To this day, she works to provide honest reporting on the war. In a 1-on-1 interview, she talks with Eelco Bosch van Rosenthal about Russian journalism, honest reporting and how to proceed if you are banned from the country you work and report on.

Before Timchenko began her chapter at Meduza, she was editor-in-chief of the news portal Lenta.ru for 10 years. After critical coverage of Russia’s invasion of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014, she was fired under pressure from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Timchenko and part of the Lenta.ru. editorial staff left for Riga, where Meduza operates and publishes from.

Bright colours, in your face text and thumping beats. This surprising combination of text, colour and sound, has been characteristic for the unique and striking video art of the American artist Tony Cokes. Since the 1980’s he has aimed to capture the complexity of our contemporary, capitalist society, and the role of art and pop culture in it. How do prisons like Guantánamo Bay and Abu Ghraib use Western pop music to torture prisoners? What role do artists play in the gentrification of the city? And how should we understand the transformation of Michael Jackson? This evening we will speak with Tony Cokes about his work and his perspective on the role of art in society.

From December 22 to January 8, Cokes’ work will be exhibited. Not in a museum, but throughout the building of De Balie.

Tony Cokes

In his work, Cokes interweaves ideas from thinkers such as James Baldwin, Tino Seghal and Paul Gilroy with music by Kraftwerk, Morissey and Nancy Sinatra. His art practice reflects his vision of art. Art never stands alone, but each time acquires new meanings in political-social contexts.

Tony Cokes lives and works in Providence, Rhode
Island, where he serves as Professor in the
Department of Modern Culture and Media at
Brown University. His work has been exhibited by MoMA, the Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art and Documenta, among others.

Edwin Carels

Edwin Carels is curator, writer, and lecturer and researcher at School of Arts KASK/HoGent. Carels has been active for many years as senior programmer and curator for IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam), where he not only coordinated the section Deep Focus, but also created thematic programmes on visual arts, music documentaries and film history. As an author, Carel publishes essays related to media archaeology, visual arts, film and animation. He was also connected to the M HKA, for whom he curated multiple exhibitions.

Maarten van Hinte

Maarten Van Hinte is actor, hiphop artist, writer and director. Together with his wife, Marjorie Boston, he is the creative brain behind productionhouse RIGHTABOUTNOW. He is inspired by African diaspora in his work and has a great fascination for language and rythm.
Van Hinte teaches cultural history and dramaturgy at the Amsterdam School of the Arts and is a guest lecturer and speaker at multiple art courses.

Voor veel Nederlanders is gezond eten onbetaalbaar geworden, maar gezonde voedselconsumptie wordt nog steeds gezien als een individuele verantwoordelijkheid. Terwijl de groep Nederlanders die onder de armoedegrens leeft groeit mede door inflatie en de hoge energiekosten, blijft gezond eten erg duur – velen kunnen zich dat niet veroorloven. Er is dus sprake van een groeiende voedselkloof in Nederland. Hoe kunnen mensen die minder te besteden hebben toch toegang krijgen tot gezond eten?

Armoede zorgt voor gezondheidsverschillen: uit onderzoek in Amsterdam is bijvoorbeeld gebleken dat de levensverwachting van mensen in rijkere stadsdelen gemiddeld zes à zeven jaar langer is dan die van mensen in armere stadsdelen, waar de toegang tot gezond eten beperkter is.

Desondanks wordt er met de vinger gewezen: ongezonde keuzes zouden domweg een kwestie van individuele onverantwoordelijkheid zijn. Hoe kan een eerlijker gesprek over armoede en (on)gezondheid in Nederland gevoerd worden? En hoe kunnen steden, inwoners en marktpartijen vervolgens samenwerken om de voedselkloof te dichten?

De Koplopers

Vergroenen, verduurzamen, innoveren. De ambities voor Nederland zijn groot, maar de realiteit is weerbarstig. In de serie De Koplopers ontmoet Teun van de Keuken mensen die oplossingen van de toekomst nu al in de praktijk brengen. Wat kunnen we van deze koplopers leren? Hoe vertalen we hun praktijkervaring naar politieke samenwerking – zodat de rest van Nederland ook mee kan in de transitie?

De Koplopers is een samenwerking met Regieorgaan SIA, die bevordert de kwaliteit en de impact van het praktijkgericht onderzoek van hogescholen.

Tweede Kamerlid Lisa Westerveld gaat in gesprek met de studenten van het ROC Nijmegen over vrijheid, democratie en actief burgerschap.

Het Nationaal Gesprek over Vrijheid is een gesprek tussen generaties, tussen studenten van het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs en bestuurlijk Nederland over burgerschap en democratie. Hoe krijgen we onze vrijheden weer terug? In wat voor maatschappij willen we leven en hoe werken we hier naartoe?

Over De Republiek

Al 30 jaar een artistieke vrijstaat voor de korte termijn.

De Republiek is een maandelijkse bijeenkomst waar in beginsel iedere artistieke professional met een zinvol voorstel terecht kan. Een collectief onderhouden binnenplaats waar de voorwaarden bepaald worden door het werk in plaats van andersom (of, verwarrender, ergens daar tussenin).

De Republiek komt voort uit Maatschappij Discordia, dat in 1992/1993 een samenwerking opzette met de toenmalige instituten Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Nieuw West en Felix Meritis. Met restgeld van deze gesubsidieerde partijen werd een plek gecreëerd waar ook ongesubsidieerde podiumkunstenaars hun ideeën op toneel konden brengen. 

Een lange, rijke en bewogen geschiedenis van De Republiek heeft geleid tot een vaste eerste maandag van de maand in De Balie; met in ieder geval een opening van Lamers en De Koning.
