De Balie and ITA present a one-off collage performance directed by Ivo van Hove about the state of democracy in Europe. With a special performance of one of the most famous historians worldwide: Simon Schama.

The artist and the tyrant have been age-old foes. The arts are outlawed in most dictatorships, because dictators know that the artist has the power to win over the public and inspire freedom.  Throughout history, artists and writers have fought for truth, freedom, and democracy.

For democratic rule to endure, citizens must believe in its worth. Failure to internalize a culture of democracy can lead to its demise. Misinformation and propaganda fuel distrust, which can in turn breed dictatorships. Therefore, nurturing the arts is vital for a true culture of democracy.

Bringing together political speeches and theatre texts, recent events and historical moments, the performance, featuring ITA’s ensemble and guest speaker Simon Schama, reflects on the European society of today.

Every two years, De Balie and Ivo van Hove create a one-off performance for the Forum on European Culture. The performance Re: Creating Europe (2016) travelled to Manchester International Festival and Théâtre d l’Odéon in Paris.

Fatma Aydemir, one of Germany’s most influential writers, will present the fourth State of European Literature. With her prize-winning debut novel Elbow (Ellbogen, 2017) and her family saga Djinns (Dschinns, 2022) Aydemir has become one of Europe’s leading literary voices and a chronicler of diasporic life; of Germany as a conflicted, sometimes hostile and at the same time inspiring country, and Turkey as a reluctant and troubled home country. Fatma Aydemir will give this year’s lecture and share her ideas on the State of Europe through a literary perspective.

After the lecture, Fatma Aydemir will meet with the Dutch writer and poet Simone Atangana Bekono, who won multiple prizes for her works such as the Libris Literatuurprijs 2021.

The State of European Literature is a yearly lecture given by an internationally renowned author or poet. Today, Europe’s languages continue to write and tell stories about the continent, its intimate lives, its neighbours and its development in the present, the past and the future. Because of political polarization, there is a new impulse for the truth of literary fiction and the power and precision of poetic expression.

The state of European literature raises awareness of the central role of literature in the current and future state of Europe. Previous speakers were Philipp Blom (2020), Nelleke Noordervliet (2021), and Alain Mabanckou (2022).

The 2023 edition of the State of European Literature is hosted by the UvA-Faculty of Humanities and SPUI25, and supported by ACES (the Amsterdam Center of European Studies), ARTES (Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies), and OSL (Onderzoeksschool Literatuurwetenschap).

Het boek vertelt, vanuit het perspectief van een dode dichter, langzaam ontdooiend in zijn vier eeuwen oude ijsgraf, het bekende avontuur van Barentz en bemanning op Nova Zembla.

Atoomproeven, klimaatverandering en ontdekkingsreizen komen samen in een lyrische roman over het eeuwige ijs, besneeuwde landschappen en het grote wit. Niedekker vond nieuwe lezers, won de F. Bordewijkprijs en staat op de shortlist van de Libris Literatuur Prijs. Hoe is dit bijzondere boek tot stand gekomen?

Programme editor Stefan Malešević will be talking with filmmaker Louis Hothothot about his family history and his unique creative process.

Being born as a second child during China’s one-child policy created complicated emotional relationships for Louis, which he resolutely confronted in his debut documentary Four Journeys, the opening film of IDFA 2021.

In his work, the emotional search for personal identity and belonging is intertwined with the broader political and societal implications.

Programmamaker Sophie Rutenfrans praat met Jolande Withuis over haar werk; met name over haar onlangs verschenen boek Vrouw en vrijheid, een betoog voor een kritischer feminisme. Jolande Withuis maakt zich zorgen over de huidige staat van het feminisme. Tegenwoordig worden bijna alle ontwikkelingen onder feminisme geschaard. Zo veel, dat ze zich afvraagt of de betekenis daarmee niet vervaagt. Sophie vraagt zich als millennial af hoe het feminisme van nu zich verhoudt tot het feminisme ‘van vroeger’, en hoe haar generatie daar tegenover staat.

Het verhaal Boekman is een aangrijpend verhaal van de Nationale Opera & Ballet over kansenongelijkheid en het noodlottige einde van de Amsterdamse wethouder Emanuel Boekman.

Mei 1940: Nederland geeft zich over en Duitse troepen bezetten het land. Op een Amsterdamse slaapkamer kijken de Joodse wethouder Emanuel Boekman en zijn vrouw Jansje elkaar aan. Van een bevriende huisarts hebben ze middelen gekregen; ze besluiten hun lot niet af te wachten.
Mei 2023: In Amsterdam zijn er een stichting, een straat, een school en een zaal die de naam van Boekman dragen, maar wie weet nog wie hij was en wat hij heeft betekend voor de stad en ons land?

De Nationale Opera maakte in coronatijd een videoregistratie van het verhaal van Boekman. Ter gelegenheid van de nationale dodenherdenking en Bevrijdingsdag wordt die video op 22 mei op het IJburg College getoond. De Balie verzorgt een inleiding en een nagesprek bij de voorstelling.

Het krachtige verhaal van Emanuel Boekman gaat over opkomen voor minderheden, over kansenongelijkheid, over dromen en over durven. Maar het is niet een verhaal dat zich enkel in de geschiedenisboeken afspeelt. Het is een verhaal over problemen waar veel groepen vandaag mee te maken hebben. Nog steeds denken te veel van ons dat dromen over bepaalde zaken niet kan, omdat ze simpelweg niet voor hen zijn weggelegd. Ik ben iets, of ik ben iets juist niet, dus dromen heeft geen zin.

Tijdens het nagesprek gaat programmamaker Noortje Smeltink in gesprek over het verhaal van Boekman samen met acteur Harpert Michielsen. Ook trekken we een parallel naar het hier-en-nu. We gaan het met verschillende sprekers hebben over de stand van zaken rondom kansenongelijkheid in Amsterdam. Welke lessen kunnen we, bijna 80 jaar later, trekken uit het verhaal van Boekman voor de toekomst van jonge Amsterdammers?
